Jane Helmers
The starting point for my work was the urban landscape within my “lockdown” environment. The mirroring, patterning and fracturing of the image reflects the act of seeing the scenes repeatedly without registering a particular viewing point. Patterning also references the traditional crafts of female homemakers who were also isolated in the domestic environment.
In the works completed after lockdown I have used objects from my immediate landscape to create an imaginary, escapist and soothing Arcadian fantasy. I see these as a response to the daily unease of living with Covid, climate change and world unrest.
